Hong Kong Journalists Association is mulling to set up an emergency fund to support ex-workers of Next Digital and Apple Daily.
Earlier Apple Daily ceased operation and thousands of workers lost their jobs. The association described the event as a labour catastrophe.
It added the assets of the company remained frozen and workers are yet to be compensated. This situation is worrying, the association pointed out.
Therefore the association will set up a Next Digital unemployment emergency fund. The association will first seek approval from its members and then organize a fund-raising campaign. The fund raised will then be distributed to former employees of Next Digital.
The association also received a batch of cash vouchers worth HK$290,000 from members of the public, who hoped to provide aid to ex-workers of the media company.
Ex-workers for Next Digital can head to the office of the association and collect vouchers worth HK$500 to $1,000 starting from Monday.
The association added that it will offer as much help as possible to affected workers.
