(Tokyo Olympics) Toyota drops TV ads amid low public support for Olympics

One of the major sponsors of the Olympics, automobile conglomerate Toyota, has stated that they will not run Olympics-related television commercials in Japan during the games.

A company spokesperson also stated that Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda and other company executives will not attend the opening ceremony.

Over 60 Japanese corporations have collectively spent over US$3 billion in sponsorship and advertising rights, with many facing a dilemma over whether or not to tie their brands to an increasingly unpopular event.

The news comes amid growing discontent with the decision by organizers to continue with the games.

A newspaper survey in Japan has found 55 percent of respondents opposed to the games going ahead, and 68 percent of respondents expressing doubts over the organizers’ ability to control coronavirus infections.

According to John’s Hopkins University resources, Japan has seen nearly 21,000 Covid cases in the past week, with over 3,000 cases being reported in the past day.
