Petrol stations could turn to charging stations: official

Authorities will consider converting a number of existing petrol or LPG filling stations into quick-charging stations for electric vehicles, environment secretary Wong Kam-sing said.

To support the popularization of electric vehicles and in anticipation of the reduced demand in the auto-fuel market, the government will review the land use of the petrol stations and study the feasibility of gradually converting some petrol or LPG stations to quick-charging stations in the medium to long term.

In Hong Kong’s first roadmap to popularizing electric vehicles, which was released in March this year, the government set a goal for ceasing the sale of conventional fuel-propelled private cars, which is to cease the new registration of such cars including hybrid vehicles in 2035 or earlier.

At present, there are about 180 petrol stations and 12 LPG stations in Hong Kong, all of which are set up on sites permitted by the government.
